Sussex Technical High School senior Isaac Van Curen of Seaford was the winner of the NAEP in Delaware video contest sponsored by the Delaware Department of Education. The contest was held to raise awareness about the upcoming National Assessment of Educational Progress.
Van Curen is studying Media Broadcasting Communications Technologies at Sussex Tech. His entry was the winner because it creatively and clearly communicated the answers to three questions: What is NAEP? Why is it important? Why should students try their best on the test?
The video will be distributed to schools throughout the state to promote the importance of NAEP to Delaware schools. Van Curen's video beat out 24 other entries in the contest. He spent approximately three days producing the video. He received a $500 Apple gift card for his win.
About 20,000 Delaware students will take the 90-minute reading or math test. NAEP results are an important way in which the nation will judge how Delaware children stack up against other states’ youth. In addition to showing the strengths of the public school system, potential employers will also have the chance to see the strengths of their future workforce in Delaware.
